Course Overview

The aims and structure of this course is to support you to develop essential skills required to progress as a creative visual practitioner.

This course is delivered through a programme of activities and workshops, including:

– Fine Art drawing and painting,
– 3D design and sculpture
– Textiles,
– Visual communication
– Digital art
– Photography and print-making.

These workshops are underpinned by core studies in life drawing and visual studies.

This course takes place within our œ23 million redevelopment the Art and Design and Media Building, with state of the art facilities.

Course Requirements

Applicants should be 18 years of age or older (although younger applicants Post 16 may be considered).

5 GCSE’s grade 9 – 4 including Maths, English and an Art related subject at grade 4.

Applicants will need to attend an interview with a portfolio of art and design work.

We welcome applications from mature students, including those who do not necessarily have the formal entry requirements, but can demonstrate their suitability at interview.

What you will Learn

To support the delivery of theoretical and contextual studies, this course also includes a programme of external visits, guest speakers and a European residential visit.

Industry standard facilities include:

Creative Media suites equipped with latest Mac technology and industry software
Photography studios and dark room
TV studio with green screen, cameras, and lighting
Ceramic and 3D studios
Garment construction fashion and textiles
Print room – screen printing, exposure bed, lazer cutting and risograph
Art studios and exhibition area

Assessment

You will be assessed continuously throughout the course to measure performance and to develop individual learning plans.

You will need to successfully complete each stage of the course in order to progress to the next.

The final stage of the course will determine your overall achieved qualification through your final major project and exhibition of work.

Progression

The primary, although not exclusive, progression route for successful candidates is Higher Education and degree level study.

If you would like to progress onto further study after this course, you will be supported through the application process and advised throughout by experienced staff.

The course staff team have a great deal of experience and an excellent track record in supporting students to successfully secure places at University.

Mandatory Units

The programme is delivered in three key stages
Stage 1: Diagnostic: Students will experience all practical areas of the course through organised activities and workshops. Through this experience they will extend skills and become more informed about potential career pathways within Art & Design and creative industries more broadly.
Stage 2: Pathway: Students elect to specialise in one area, choosing from Fine art, 3D Design, Visual Communication or Fibre arts. Students will embark on theme-based projects aimed at extending skills and knowledge within that area. Students will be supported closely by experienced specialist staff.
Stage 3: Confirmatory: Students will undertake a self-led Final Major project culminating with an exhibition of selected work.
