Course Overview

This is a two-year course that teaches students the skills and knowledge needed to work in the digital industry particularly in the area of Software Development. It is an alternative to A levels and apprenticeships at an advanced level.

Course Requirements

5 GCSE grades 4+ (including maths and English language)

What you will Learn

Programming: Learn to code in a variety of languages.
Software development: Learn to design, implement, test, maintain and support software installations and maintenance.
Problem solving: Learn to analyse problems and define requirements for developing software design.
Digital environments: Work in physical, virtual, and cloud environments.
Emerging technologies: Learn about the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and more.
Legal and regulatory requirements: Understand the ethical and moral implications of digital technology
Students will get the benefit of a mix of classroom learning with practical hands-on experience in industry with a 45 day industrial placement.

Assessment

Assessed through three components:
Core: Two written exam papers and an Employer Set Project (ESP) to test core knowledge, skills and behaviours.
Occupational Specialism: An Occupational Specialism Project (OSP) – set of tasks completed under controlled conditions over a number of weeks in year two.
Industry Placement: A 45-day work placement in the IT industry.

Progression

Upon successful completion of this qualification, over two years, students can progress onto a Higher Level Apprenticeship, a Higher Education qualification at University or onto one of our HND Computing qualifications (with top up Degree options) or can progress or employment in this industry.

This Technical Qualification aligns to the Software Development Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship and therefore supports progression to job opportunities in software design and development. Job roles could include:
