Course Overview

Discover a creative and fulfilling hobby or even a potential career in fashion design!

Whether you’re a complete beginner or have some sewing experience, a beginners’ dressmaking and pattern drafting course can provide you with the knowledge and skills to start creating your own clothing and explore your creativity in the world of fashion.

This course will enable you to gain valuable sewing skills that will save you money on alterations and store-bought clothing. It will also help you to understand the process of creating patterns and sewing garments, which can be a foundation for more advanced projects.

Please be informed that participants are required to have a sewing box containing essential equipment.

Learners will need to bring in their own pattern and fabric, as well as any haberdashery such as thread, zips and buttons. Suggested patterns include basic skirts, slip dresses or trousers, such as pyjama bottoms or joggers.

Course Requirements

Participants are not required to possess any previous knowledge or expertise. We welcome individuals with a genuine enthusiasm for the subject and a willingness to actively engage and contribute.

What you will Learn

Introduction to Sewing: An overview of sewing tools, equipment, and essential sewing techniques for beginners.

Fabric Selection: Guidance on choosing suitable fabrics for different types of garments and projects.

Pattern Reading: Learning to interpret commercial sewing patterns and understand pattern symbols and markings.

Pattern Drafting Basics: Introduction to pattern drafting techniques, which allow you to create custom patterns from scratch.

Body Measurements: Taking accurate body measurements and using them to create well-fitting garments.

Garment Construction: Step-by-step instructions on how to sew seams, darts, pleats, and gathers, as well as how to finish edges and hems.

Sewing Terminology: Understanding sewing-related terminology and jargon.

Assessment

This is a practical course with no formal assessments. Students will receive helpful feedback throughout the course.

Progression

Upon successful completion of the course students may wish to progress to the advanced sewing course to develop their skills further.
