Course Overview

Gaining a qualification in English Language is essential for further training or employment. This course will help you achieve your goals and offers you a range of skills that will give you the confidence in both written and oral English Language. Classes will focus on individual needs and abilities and offer a wide range of innovative teaching and learning approaches to help you achieve your goals.

Course Requirements

Any adult can apply for GCSE English. Those who have a GCSE grade 3, or Level 2 Functional Skills in English achieved within the last 5 years, will be interviewed for suitability but will not need to complete an initial assessment. For applicants that have older/no formal qualifications, your basic Literacy skills will be initially assessed through a written assessment. Please note, in most cases we are unable to offer you a resit if you already have a grade GCSE grade 4.

What you will Learn

A GCSE English course covers a range of skills related to the English language, literature, and communication. The course is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Reading Skills:
Literary Analysis: Analysing and interpreting texts, including novels, poetry, and plays.
Understanding Non-Fiction: Comprehending and critically evaluating non-fiction texts, such as articles, reports, and essays.

Writing Skills:
Creative Writing: Producing imaginative and original pieces, such as stories, poems, or scripts.
Analytical Writing: Crafting essays and responses that demonstrate an understanding of literary themes, characters, and techniques.
Transactional Writing: Developing skills in writing for different purposes, such as letters, articles, and speeches.

Speaking and Listening:
Presentations: Planning and delivering presentations on various topics.
Discussion and Debate: Participating in group discussions, debates, and spoken interactions.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
Grammar Rules: Understanding and applying grammatical rules and structures.
Vocabulary Development: Expanding and using a varied and appropriate vocabulary.

Exam Preparation:
Practice Papers: Completing mock exams and practice papers to prepare for the final assessments.
Exam Techniques: Learning effective exam strategies and time management skills.

Assessment

One Spoken Language assessment carried out internally during the year.
Two written exams in June.

Progression

We want you to be confident with English and this course is designed to help you improve your skills and attain a higher grade in order to go on to further study or into employment.

Career Options

Completing a GCSE English course provides a solid foundation in language, communication, and literature. While it may not directly lead to specific careers, it does enhance essential skills that are valuable across various professions.
