Course Overview

This HNC in Civil Engineering prepares you for a career in the construction sector, by acquiring knowledge, understanding and developing skills that underpin the study of civil engineering. Problem solving is a very important skill, and you will use your critical thinking and analysis skills to apply the UK and EU codes of practice and industry standards learned on this course. The areas of maths and science which support engineering principles will be covered, along with management techniques and subjects that boost your awareness of the economic and commercial context of engineering processes.

Course Requirements

All applications will be considered individual merit, however, offers will usually be based on:

1. BTEC Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject
2. Other related Level 3 qualifications
3. Normally 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (or numeric score of 4/5 under newly reformed GCSE grading), including Maths and English
4. An Access to Higher Education Diploma in a relevant area
5. Related work experience may be considered in place of formal qualifications

What you will Learn

You will acquire knowledge of various aspects of the civil engineering field; in particular, in-depth theoretical knowledge of structural design and analysis as well as an understanding of concrete technology. Exposure to setting-out processes and surveying will equip students with the principles of mapping and land surveying. You will learn about the different construction methods that may be adopted on different projects, and you will become familiar with the equipment available to perform on-site work.

Those that choose to progress to HND will have the opportunity to explore geotechnical aspects within the geology and soil mechanics unit, with practical work on sieve analysis and soil sheer strength.

You will be assessed using a range of methods including written assignments, reports, and presentations.

You can progress to the Level 5 HND Civil Engineering
