Course Overview

The aim of this Higher Technical Qualification is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals who can meet the needs of employers in the construction sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The variety of units undertaken will prepare students to undertake project and site management, which will improve career prospects of those seeking to work within the industry.

Course Requirements

All applications will be considered individual merit, usually based on 64 UCAS points comprising either:

GCE A level
Level 3 vocational qualification in a relevant subject.
Access to Higher Education Diploma in a relevant area.

Successful applicants should have 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including Maths and English.

Mature students with relevant work experience and/or professional qualifications are welcome to apply and may be invited to an interview.

What you will Learn

Students will be introduced to the different technological concepts used to enable the construction of building elements, from substructure to completion, by understanding the different functional characteristics and design considerations that need to be borne in mind when selecting the most suitable technological solution. Students will explore the make-up and the impact of the construction industry on the environment and society. You will be able to analyse the legal status of different types of construction companies, their business strategies and how they raise and manage their finances, and the management of resources available to them. Students will be introduced to the drivers and benefits associated with Building Information Modelling (BIM), as well as the terminology that surrounds it. You will take part in activities to develop behaviours (the attitudes and approaches required for a competence) and transferable skills. These transferable skills include communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are highly valued in higher education and in the workplace.

Assessment

You will be assessed using a range of methods including written assignments, reports, presentations and undertake some practical activity.

Progression

Students can continue their studies with us and progress to a level 5 HND Construction Management for England (Construction Design and Build Technician). Following this students may be eligible to complete a one year top-up degree at Level 6 such as:

BSc (Hons) in Construction Management
BSc (Hons) in Construction Project Management
BA and BSc (Hons) in Construction
BSc (Hons) in Construction Engineering Management

Career Options

On completion students may be eligible for roles such as Construction Engineer, Quantity Surveyor, Construction Site Manager, Projects Manager, Demolition Construction Manager.
