Course Overview

This course is for those with a passion for creative technology and media production. It will appeal to filmmakers, content creators, gamers, designers, digital artists, and image makers looking for a dynamic, multi-disciplined Digital Media environment that harnesses breadth and the opportunity for specialised depth also.

Course Requirements

Whilst applications are considered on an individual basis, offers are usually based on a requirement to have:

64 UCAS points
L3 qualification:
– Access to HE (60 credits at P)
– BTEC- L3 Diploma-MM
– T-level-Pass
– A level-DDE

4 GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above including Maths and English.

We are particularly interested in applicants who wish to work within the Creative Media Industry in roles within TV, Film, Graphics, VR, XR and AR, animation and content creation.

We also ask that you are willing to learn and undertake:
– Industry-based work experience.
– A broad range of production skills and techniques
– Planning to deliver a project working to a live brief.
– Excellent attendance and a full-time commitment to group and individual projects.

The selection process will involve an UCAS application and may also involve an interview. TEAMS/telephone interviews are available for any applicants who are not able to attend interview on-site.

What you will Learn

You will fuse traditional and digital media to shape new forms of communication. Alongside foundations in cinematography, content creation, audio and video editing, graphic design, and animation, you will explore areas such as virtual and augmented reality. Knowledge of more immersive interactive applications will be beneficial in a rapidly changing field, where the industry now requires multi-skilled digital media practitioners, creative but also competent in a range of technology.
Throughout, you will be working with live briefs and embedded industry placements to enrich and replicate ‘real-world’ experiences and build your employability skills.

Top up (Level 6) in BA Digital Media Development or our Top up (level 6) BA Contemporary Creative Practice, awarded by Sheffield Hallam University.

Other Top up degrees in areas such as Digital Media, Animation, Graphics, Media or Film Production.

Mandatory Units

At level 4 you will study:

Ideas and Concepts – Building foundations in a range of media.
Digital Exploration – Experimentation of range of digital products using different hardware and software, this could include video production and editing, podcasting, 3D modelling and graphics, motion graphics, photography, sound design and VR.
Engagement – Creation of digital media product of your choice.
Context 1 – A critical study into the historical context of media and how it has informed contemporary practices.

At level 5 you will study:

Immersion and Interface – Building a virtual environment.
Future Self – Industry placement and self-development module.
Realisation – Final major project, a public exhibition and professional portfolio of range of media work built across the 2 years on course.
Context 2 – Textual analysis essay and study of practitioner or medium of your choice.

Extra Costs Involved

You might be expected to visit events as part of your studies that would sometimes require extra cost. There is an annual residential to an International desitnation which whilst not compulsary is strongly recommended. Previous destinations have included Berlin, Krakow, Budapest, Barcelona and New York. Additional equipment will be required to store your digital work e.g. Hard drives, as well as stationary to record your development work such as drawing pads and drawing equipment. We will endeavour to keep the extra cost to a minimum and some of the purchased items could be at discounted cost. This will be explained in more detail to you at interview.

How Long To Complete

The Foundation Degree will take two years full time. Students who successfully complete the FdA Digital Media Design programme will be eligible to articulate onto our L6 Top-up in Contemporary Creative Practice at the Stockport campus.
This will mean that with this additional year you will graduate with a full BA (Honours Degree).

Programme Structure

This programme has been designed so that in year 1 you can experiment and learn a broad range of digital media.

In year 2, concepts and techniques are further developed. You also begin to identify your chosen area of specific interest, take part in industry briefs and work experience, and refine your craft culminating in a final exhibition of your work.
