Course Overview

This course is designed to give learners the high level specialist technical knowledge and skills needed to carry out diagnostic and fault finding procedures on modern cars and other light vehicles.

The qualification helps provide entry into employment within the retail motor industry and onto apprenticeships in light vehicle maintenance and repair, it also provides a high level of underpinning knowledge and skills which may allow progression onto some higher education qualifications in automotive related subjects.

Areas of study for the level 3 include:

Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle electrical faults
Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle engine faults
Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis system faults
Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle transmission and driveline system faults

Course Requirements

4 GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above (inckuding maths and English Language).

Applicants will also be required to complete an assessment, which must be successfully finished to a satisfactory standard prior to being offered a place on the course.

What you will Learn

The course is a mixture of practical and theoretical knowledge.

Theory is delivered through a combination of classroom based sessions along with independent learning assessed through a number of written assignments.

The practical element of the course takes place in our fully equipped motor vehicle workshops using modern diagnostic and fault finding equipment. Learners are required to provide their own safety footwear and protective overalls for these sessions.

A good understanding of the fundamentals of vehicle technology is essential for those wishing to undertake this course, in order to determine this prospective candidates will need to undergo an interview with the course tutor and a knowledge assessment.

Assessment

The programme is based on continuous practical assessment along with completion of a portfolio of evidence. Each unit also includes a written assessment and multi-choice examination.

Progression

Successful candidates can progress to onto an apprenticeship or employment as a trainee vehicle technician.

The qualification may allow progression onto some higher education qualifications in automotive and engineering related subjects.
