Course Overview

UK creative industries generate more than œ100bn a year to the UK economy and employ more than 2m people. This course offers you the technical and creative grounding you will need to become part of this expanding sector. The course provides a balance between the practical and theoretical aspects of Hair and Media Make-up Studies, where you will research and discuss a range of media looks, special effects and develop the advanced skills of a make-up artist. With our expert guidance you will develop your practical skills in theatre, special effects, hair, and media make-up to a high professional industry standard. During practical lessons you will take part in a range of demonstrations, workshops, discussion, and research activities presenting and communicating your ideas through practical work and a portfolio ‘look book’. Theory classes will involve developing your knowledge through discussion and answering questions in preparation for written examinations.

Course Requirements

4 GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above (including maths and/or English Language).

What you will Learn

This course will enable you to gain more advanced practical skills and knowledge in order to provide Hair, Special Effects including prosthetics and bald caps and Media Make-up to the general public and to gain employment in the Hair, Photographic and Media Make-up Industry.

There are opportunities for a Hair, Photographic and Media Make-up Artist to find employment in a variety of areas that include Hair and make-up studio, Beauty salon, Media, Production companies, TV/Movies, Theatre companies, Hotels or resorts.

Assessment

As part of this qualification you are required to produce a portfolio of evidence. A portfolio will confirm the knowledge, understanding and skills that you have learnt. It may be in electronic or paper format.

Witness statements
Audio-visual media
Evidence of prior learning or attainment
Written questions
Oral questions
Assignments
Case studies

Level 2 Diploma’s in Manicure, Pedicure and Waxing or Beauty Specialists.
Level 3 Extended Diploma in Make-Up (Tech)
Foundation Degrees in Fashion and editorial make-up or Media Make-up. (with the necessary UCAS points you may need to study the Extended Diploma)

Career Options

Potential employment could be found working as a professional Makeup Artist in theatres, photographic studios, print media, film, independently or in a or home-based or mobile setting. Also the potential to teach in the future.
