Course Overview

The BTEC in Applied Science offers students the chance to continue their studies of all three sciences but in vocational scenarios, with less emphasis on examinations than the A-Level sciences. We offer the Extended Diploma, which is a full time, 3 A-Level equivalent qualification.

There’s a whole range of exciting career options in the science industry, across many different and fascinating areas, including food technology, biomedical science, forensic science, textile technology, microbiology, aerospace, clinical research and pharmacy. There will always be new things waiting to be discovered so there will always be a demand for scientists.

Course Requirements

General entry requirements for our Level 3 Advanced Vocational Qualification include 4 GCSEs grade 4 or above, including English and/or Maths. For Applied Science we are looking for applicants with Grade 4s or above in your GCSE Combined Science or GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

We are an inclusive College and will consider all applications on a case by case basis at interview

What you will Learn

The course uses a combination of assessment styles including examinations and coursework to give students confidence that they can apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace.

You will have the opportunity to be innovative, research new possibilities, make breakthroughs and improve our understanding and knowledge of the world.

Our highly-trained team of subject specialist teachers will support students in preparing for four examined units. Students gain valuable organisational, time management and study skills to equip them well to continue learning on higher education courses and throughout their career.

Mandatory Units

The Applied Science course covers a variety of general units from across all sciences, through to more specialised units like astrophysics, microbiology and industrial chemistry
