Course Overview

The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Healthcare Professions’ Support for England offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning. The aims of the Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Healthcare Professions’ Support for England are to:

– Equip students with the healthcare practice skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global health and social care environment.

– Provide education and training for a range of careers in healthcare, including healthcare assistant practitioner roles in a range of settings such as nursing assistant roles, care navigation, planning, and assessment.

– Provide opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in healthcare, or progress to higher education qualifications such as a pre-registration degree in one of the allied health professions or nursing.

– Provide opportunities for students to develop the skills, techniques and personal attributes essential for successful working lives.

– Provide students with opportunities to address contemporary health and care issues facing the sector, and society at large, with particular emphasis on integrated and compassionate care, and person-centred and personal approaches to providing healthcare to individuals across their lifespan.

Course Requirements

All applications will be considered individual merit, however, offers will usually be based on:

BTEC Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject.
A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject
Other related Level 3 qualifications.
Normally 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (or numeric score of 4/5 under newly reformed GCSE grading), including Maths and English.
An Access to Higher Education Diploma in a relevant area.

Related work experience may be considered in place of formal qualifications.

What you will Learn

The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Healthcare Professions’ Support for England offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning. This effectively builds underpinning core skills while preparing the student for subject specialisation at Level 5. Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in evidence-based practice, personal research, self-study, directed study and workplace learning and experience. At Level 4, students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the healthcare sector through seven core units, which include one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment.

Assessment

The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Healthcare Professions’ Support for England requires at least 225 hours of work experience/placement in healthcare settings and a Practice Learning, Assessment and Development (PLAD) portfolio, including reflections on placement/workplace learning and experiences, to be completed.

A variety of assessment methods will be included which may include written tasks, reports, case studies, self-reflection and portfolios.

Progression

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a broad introduction and solid grounding, which students can build on if they decide to continue their studies. The Higher National Certificate builds underpinning core skills and offers preparation for subject specialisation at Level 5 (HND).

Career Options

Graduates successfully completing the Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate in Healthcare Professions’ Support for England will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the basic concepts, values and principles of healthcare practice, and the skills to perform effectively as a support worker in several different settings in the healthcare sector.

This will include the ability to communicate accurately and appropriately and, be able to demonstrate the behaviours and qualities needed for employment that requires some degree of personal responsibility. On completion, graduates will have developed a range of transferable skills to ensure effective interprofessional team working, independent initiative, organisational competence and problem-solving strategies. They will be adaptable and flexible in their approach to healthcare practice, show resilience under pressure, and meet challenging targets with a given resource.
