To support individuals on their journey to a successful career, all students studying with us here at Stockport College are enlisted onto our Careers Programme, as an integral part of their study programme.
We provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to make positive career choices. The Careers Programme is tailored to the needs of individual students and provides a range of activities prior to enrolment, on programme and also as part of a student’s progression at the end of their course. Students are entitled to impartial and confidential CEIAG which is person-centred, meets professional standards of practice and is delivered by specialist personnel.
Stockport College holds the Matrix Standard for the provision of Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG). There are teams of professional, qualified and impartial Advisors available to offer a range of IAG services.

Work experience is a key component of 16 to 19 study programmes and academic courses. It aims to give young people the opportunity to develop their career choices and develop those critical employability skills needed for employment. All students are expected to undertake work experience / personal and professional development as part of their study programme. This applies to academic, technical, and applied pathways.
Work experience can take many forms, including work tasters, running a student enterprise, participation in social action, volunteering or placements. Activities must be planned to take account of the learner’s needs and future plans. Part-time jobs that are relative to the course can also be logged as a placement.

Good career guidance helps inspire students towards further study and enables them to make informed decisions whenever choices are open to them. It helps them to understand enough about the world of work to know what skills and qualifications they need to succeed. It is critical for social mobility because it helps open students’ eyes to careers they may not have considered.
The Benchmarks for Colleges listed here outline the important elements of a robust career guidance programme, as well as outlining how we at Trafford College meet the benchmark. They have been developed from the Gatsby Benchmarks for good career guidance, following consultation with a range of colleges across England to align them with the needs of the sector.
