A groundbreaking week of practical learning and community spirit took place as part of the Construction Cares initiative, a partnership between Trafford and Stockport College, GMI Construction Group, Trafford Council, and the Trafford Virtual School. The programme welcomed care leavers and individuals looking to improve their DIY skills to an inspiring three-day series of workshops at Trafford College.
Participants got stuck into a variety of trade skills, taught by passionate professionals:
- Monday: Tiling with Trafford & Stockport College Group and Carpentry & Joinery with TMJ Contractors Ltd
- Tuesday: Painting & Decorating with Lee Fitzmartin from Smith Painters Ltd and Plumbing with Turnkey Air Conditioning Ltd
- Wednesday: Electrical work led by JDEL Property Ltd

But this event wasn’t just about tools and techniques—it was about connection. These sessions gave participants a chance to build relationships, gain confidence, and enjoy being in a positive, social learning environment.
Cllr Karina Carter, Trafford’s Executive Member for Children and Young People said:
“I am thrilled at what we’ve achieved with this first event. To attract 20 participants was wonderful but it speaks volumes about the quality of the training on offer that they returned each day eager to learn more and make the most of this opportunity.
“The college facilities were perfect for the course, giving participants access to all the materials and tools required – even steel toe boots – and the benefit of engaging hands-on teaching. The toolkits and goody bags were a generous touch and very well received.”
“This has proved to be a very impactful initiative for the young people taking part, and our Virtual School is looking forward to offering this series of DIY skills workshops in partnership with Trafford College and GMI Construction again in the near future.” – Cllr Karina Carter
‘The Construction Cares DIY workshop is part of GMI Construction Responsible Strategy and an initiative we are very proud of. This is more than a technical skills workshop for us, it brings local communities together and creates relationships. It is important that we give back and create a brilliant experience for the people attending.
– James Bruce GMI Construction
This is the first workshop we have completed in Trafford and to have 20 attendees consistently over the three days shows the impact the session had. I would like to thank Trafford College, Trafford Council, Trafford virtual Schools and our fantastic supply chain.
Looking ahead, organisers will now support interested participants to obtain their CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) cards, opening even more doors in the construction industry.
This event has shown that Construction Cares is more than a skills workshop—it’s a foundation for future careers, confidence, and community.
